Our favourite WWDC22 Apple Announcements

June 9, 2022 by eStormAus

In June Apple announced a host of new products – check out our favourite announcements below!

iOS 16

The newest operating system for iPhone introduces a huge update to the lock screen, and new sharing, communication and intelligence features that change the way users experience iPhones.

The lock screen becomes more personal, customisable and helpful with iOS 16. With a new multi-layered effect, the subjects of photos are set in front of the on the lock screen, creating a sense of depth. Users can also change the look of the date and time with expressive type stiles and colour choices. The lock screen also features widgets similar to Apple Watch faces, making it easier to get information at a glance (such as calendar events, weather, battery, alarms, and more).

Live activities has been introduced to help users stay on top of things that are happening in real time, such as sports games, workouts, ride shares, or food deliveries. Notifications have also been redesigned to roll up from the bottom screen so users have a clear view of their personalised lock screen.

iOS 16 also introduces updates to messages. Users can recall recently sent messages, recover recently deleted messages, and mark conversation as unread.

Wallet updates includes the introduction of Apple Pay Later, which provides US users with a secure way to split the cost of an Apple pay purchase into four equal payments spread over 6 weeks with zero interest or fees.

iPadOS 16

Major updates to iPadOS makes the iPad experience even more versatile and enjoyable. New features in Messages make it easy to begin collaborating and managing content across files, keynote, numbers, pages, notes, reminders and Safari, as well as third party apps. When changes are made to shared files, everyone can see updates at the top of the Messages thread. Similar to iOS 16, users can also edit or recall recently sent messages, recover recently deleted messages, and mark conversations as unread. Furthermore, users can begin a SharePlay session via messages so they can choose a SharePlay activity (like movies, TV shows, workouts, or games) and enjoy it together in sync while chatting via messages.

iPadOS 16 introduces Freeform, a new collaboration app with a flexible canvas, and gives users the ability to see, share and collaborate all in one place without worrying about layouts and page sizes.

Stage Manager: stage manager is the new multi-tasking experience that automatically organises apps and windows, making it easy to switch between tasks. Available on iPads enables with the M1 chip.

Notes: Notes allows users to create neater handwritten notes with the ability to automatically straighten handwriting, use iCloud passwords to lock personal notes, add screenshots in Quick Note, and use Smart Folders with filtering capabilities.

macOS Ventura

The latest version of the mac operation system has been dubbed ‘macOS Ventura’. The highlight in macOS Ventura is Stage Manager – a feature which gives Mac users an all-new way to stay focussed on tasks while seamlessly switching between apps and windows. Continuity Camera has also been introduced in the latest update, which uses iPhone as the webcam on Mac.

Updates to Spotlight includes a new design that makes navigation easier, with new features such as Quick Look for quickly previewing files. Live text allows users to search for photos by text inside images. To increase productivity, users can now take actions from Spotlight, starting a timer, creating new documents or running shortcuts.

Live text: Live text utilises device intelligence to recognise text in images across the system.

Accessibility tools: New accessibility tools include Live Captions for all audio content, type to speak on calls, text checker to support proofreading for voice over users, and more.

System Preferences: System Preferences will be called ‘System Settings’, and comes with a refreshed design that is easier to navigate

Security: macOS security introduces new tools make Mac more resistant to attack, including rapid security response that works in between normal updates to keep security up to date without the need to reboot.

watchOS 9

The latest version of watchOS introduces new watch faces to personalise and customise your Apple watch, plus a new health feature that allows users to track how long an instance of atrial fibrillation lasts. Workout App updates include richer metrics for measuring performance, Custom Workouts to create a structured workout that can include work and rest intervals.

New running metrics include stride length, ground contact time, and vertical oscillation can all be added as metrics on workout views.

Macbook Air

The all-new MacBook Air has been completely redesigned around the M2 chip. Measuring just 11.3mm thin and 1.2 kilograms, it features a durable aluminium unibody enclose that is built to last. The newest MacBook air has a 13.6inch Liquid Retina display, a 1080p FaceTime HD camera, a four-speaker sound system and up to 18 hours of battery life with MagSafe charging.

The MacBook Air also features two Thunderbolt ports, and a 3.5mm audio jack with support for high-impedance headphones. Furthermore, the Magic Keyboard features a full-height function row with Touch ID and a spacious industry-leading Force Touch trackpad.

The M2 chip takes the performance of MacBook air even further. For extensive workloads like editing complex timelines in Final Cut Pro, performance is nearly 40% faster than previous generations; applying filters and effects in apps like Adobe Photoshop is up to 20% faster than before, and even with a larger display and increased performance, MacBook air delivers the same great, all-day battery life MacBook Air fans have come to enjoy, with up to 18 hours of video playback.

Available in silver, space grey, midnight and starlight.

Apple September 2021 Keynote – What’s New?

September 15, 2021 by eStormAus

In Apple’s September 2021 Keynote ‘California streaming’, the tech giant’s CEO Tim Cook unveiled Apple’s latest product range. The announcement was headlined by the new iteration of the iPhone, and was followed by an introduction of the latest iPads and Apple watches.

Read on for a quick recap of Apple’s biggest announcements.

iPhone 13

The beloved iPhone doesn’t get a complete makeover this year, but it has plenty of new features to boast about, including an advanced dual-camera system with a new Wide camera with bigger pixels, and sensor-shift optical image stabilisation (OIS) that offers better low-light image quality. Perhaps the coolest the new feature is ‘Cinematic Mode’, which allows you to ‘effortlessly create cinema-grade videos’ even without filmmaking experience!

The iPhone 13 is powered by an A15 Bionic processor, which has four high performance and two high efficiency cores. You can expect 5G support, a super retina XDR display that is 28% brighter in sunlight, and extended battery life in a day (+2.5 hours, and +1.5 hours for the mini compared to its predecessors).

Similar to the iPhone 12, there are two versions of the iPhone 13 – a 6.1 inch model, along with a mini 5.4 inch model. It will come in the following colours; pink, blue, midnight, starlight and red.

With entry-level storage starting at 128GB, you can expect to pay around $1,349 or $1,199 for the mini version.

The iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max features three new rear cameras, with improved telephoto lenses, MotionPro displays, and a new macro mode that allows you to capture subjects as close as 2cm. The Pro & Pro Max will come in gold, graphite, silver and sierra blue, with prices starting at $1,699 for the Pro (6.1 inch display) and $1,849 for the Max (6.7 inch display).

Apple Watch Series 7

A tad bit larger than its predecessor, the Series 7 Apple Watch will come in 45mm and 31mm sizes, with a slimmer 1.7mm bezel around the display. Apple claims that the increased size of the screen will fit 50% more text and a full keyboard.

The Series 7 focuses highly on durability, with a redesigned crack-resistant front crystal that is 50% thicker than the Series 6.  The Series 7 can still be worn underwater, and the certified IP6X rating means it can withstand dust, beaches, and the desert.

On a single charge with the Magnetic Fast Charger USB-C Cable, the Series 7 can last 18-hours and boasts 33% faster charging compared to Series 6 .

The Series 7 comes in black, blue, red, gold and green, and it is rumoured that prices will start at about $550.

iPad mini

The new iPad mini gets a performance boost with the A15 bionic chip, with a 5-core GPU that is 80% faster and a 6-core CPU that is 40% faster than the previous generation, allowing users to play graphically rich games or use demanding professional apps.

The larger 8.3 inch Liquid Retina display has advanced technologies like a P3 wide colour gamut, anti-reflecting screen coating, and True Tone, which come together to bring images and videos to life. Plus, the new screen combined with the landscape stereo speakers makes watching movies on the mini a great experience.

Previously only available on iPad Pro, Centre Stage is now also available on iPad mini, so users can enjoy more engaging video calls with the updated Ultra Wide front camera and new 12MP sensor for a larger field of view.

The iPad mini now features a USB-C port for up the 5Gbps data transfer (10x faster than the previous generation) and connects to a vast number of USB-C accessories such as cameras, external storage, and displays up to 4K.

5G is now available on the cellular version of the mini, and the iPad supports Apple Pencil (2nd gen), which attaches magnetically for wireless charging and pairing.

The cheapest model starts at $749 (or $979 for the cellular model), and comes in the following colours: black, white, dark cherry, English lavender, and electric orange.

iPad 9

The iPad 9 comes equipped with an A13 Bionic processor that delivers a 20% performance boost over its predecessor. Apple claims that the iPad 9 is 3x faster than the best-selling Chromebook and 6x faster than the best-selling Android tablet, making it a solid device for students and professionals alike.

Like the iPad mini, Centre Stage is now available on iPad, and is enabled by the new 12MP Ultra Wide front camera and Neural Engine. True Tone has also been introduced to the iPad’s 10.2-inch Retina display, which adjusts screen content to the colour temperature of a room for a more comfortable viewing experience.

The new iPad starts with 64GB (double the storage of the previous gen) and goes up to 256GB for users who require more storage. Entry-level models will start at $499 for the wi-fi only version or $699 for cellular.

And that’s all Apple has announced for now! If you’re missing an upgrade of your favourite Apple product (such as AirPods or new MacBooks) don’t fret – it’s safe to assume that Apple will release another Keynote by the end of this year that introduces more awesome new products.

New Apple Announcements: iOS 12

June 5, 2018 by eStormAus

Okay – there’s a lot to get through, but it’s VERY exciting stuff! Strap in fellow Apple nerds – here’s some of the new and exciting stuff coming in iOS12.

iOS 12

2018 Apple Event Announcement iOS12

Performance

iOS has been enhanced for a faster and more responsive experience all round. Every day things like launching the camera or typing on the keyboard – they’re all faster than ever before. Even multi-tasking with several apps at once – the new iOS has been improved to support that, going all the way back to iPhone 5s and iPad Air!

  • Up to 70% faster swipe to Camera
  • Up to 50% faster keyboard display
  • Up to 2x faster app launch under heavy workload

FaceTime

Apple FaceTime 32 Person Group ChatFaceTime now supports video and audio with up to a whopping 32 people at once! I don’t even have that many friends! …no time for sad realisations! The tile of the person speaking will automatically get larger so you don’t lose track of the conversation.

The cool feature is the ability to start Group FaceTime right from a group chat in Messages!

Miimoji Memoji

Memoji Apple iOS 12

Nothing at all similar to a Nintendo Mii comes Apple’s brand new type of customizable Animoji for the iPhone X. Create a Memoji to match your personality and mood. You can make as many alter egos as you want to use in Messages and FaceTime.

Augment Reality

AR iOS 12

ARKit 2 makes it possible for developers to create more immersive augmented reality experiences — even ones that multiple people can experience simultaneously. AR objects can now be sent with Messages and Mail, then viewed in the real world. And a new AR app in iOS called Measure helps you measure real-world objects just by pointing your camera at them.

Screen Time

Screen Time on Apps iOS12

Okay, this feature is supposed to be for parents to give them a better understanding of how much time their kids spend using apps, visiting sites and using their devices overall. But I think EVERYONE is going to use this – even I’m going to use this.

I love this feature because it really gives you detailed insight into where and when you’re wasting time. I think this feature could really end up helping a lot of people cut down on phone use by helping them to identify their use triggers and times.

I also love that you can set time limits so you physically can’t use certain apps after you’ve spent a set amount of time on them.

Notifications

Just as Sceen Time gives you more insight into how you use your devices, notification management in iOS 12 gives you new ways to reduce interruptions throughout your day. You can now manage your notifications in real time from the Lock screen, sending notifications from a specific app to Notification Center or turning them off altogether. Siri also makes intelligent suggestions about your alerts based on how you interact with them. And message threads and notification topics are grouped together, so it’s easier to see what’s important at a glance.

Four weeks ago, I took my cracked iPad to this store for repair. The employee behind the counter informed me that because I did not have AppleCare, Apple does not fix iPads but rather replaces them entirely. He advised me to take it to an unauthorized repair shop, despite me explaining that the iPad was less than 12 months old. He insisted that Apple would not fix it.I followed his advice and had the iPad repaired elsewhere. However, it has now stopped charging. When I returned to your store, I was told that because someone had previously opened the device, this store could no longer assist with the repair. The first employee failed to inform me about this critical detail. As a result, I’m now stuck with a $1,300 device that doesn’t work. I feel misled and frustrated by the lack of proper guidance from the staff

Fantastic service, was referred by Apple after MacBook developed a dark screen and wouldn’t turn off. I was informed of possibility to pay for diagnostic fee and expect to leave it for a fee days. I found the gentlemen friendly and accommodating. The service was prompt, fair subsequent charges. My MacBook had storage issues, I got a new laptop and they helped transferring my data. I will certainly be going back to them in future and I strongly recommend these professionals to anyone having issues with their devices.

Dropped my MacBook in just shy of 3 years old with a battery issue. The team were very prompt in email response and with the computer. Dropped Saturday, said it would be ready Wednesday. To my surprise it was ready today (Tuesday) a whole day early. Even better they covered the replacement of the battery under warranty. Highly recommended!

What a terrible experience dealing with eStorm in Springfield Lakes. After spending an hour on live chat with Apple last night they said that there was an issue with phone and to take it to one of their retail stores or to an authorised service centre. The closest to us was eStrom Service Centre in Springfield Lakes. We were booked in there by Apple who were 100% aware of the phone being out of warranty but due to the issue they were happy for it to be taken in. When my wife got there she was greeted by someone called Dallas who then proceeded to ask her for $40 as a diagnosis fee. At no stage were we made aware that there would be a fee even though Apple were aware of the phone being out of warranty. When my wife made him aware of that he said that it was their policy and there was nothing they could do about it. My wife turned around and walked out. I called to ask what the story was and Dallas said exactly what I have written above. No consideration about the fee, it was internal policy and not their problem that Apple didn't tell us about it. So disappointed at this experience and will never be using them again or would ever recommend them to anyone.

I took my MacBook Pro in to get the screen diagnosed and replaced through apple warrenty, it was completed very quickly and estorm did an excellent job. It was so much easier going to estorm over an apple shop, no wait time, plenty of appointment times and no pushing your way through noisy crowds. Will definitely be going back to them for any issues. Thanks!
